TEACHING POSITION IN THE DEPARTMENT OF CHURCH MINISTRY

The Pacific Theological College (PTC), a regional ecumenical theological institution located in Suva, Fiji Islands, is inviting applications by suitable candidates from the region and around the world for a teaching position in the department of Church Ministry. The position is based on a potentially renewable 4 years contract starting from May 2023.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

Essential:

  • A Ph.D. in Theology with a concentration in Christian Education focussing on contextual and intercultural theological education that extends into practical theology with special reference to application of community learning and development theory and practice, praxis and leadership in theological education.
  • Areas of sub-concentration are opened but may include
    • Practical theology and religious education
    • Pastoral theology.
    • Religion and society.
    • Social justice.
  • In addition to firm grounding in contextual theological education, candidates must have facility in such approaches as post colonialism.
  • Commitment to intercultural and interdisciplinary approaches to address colonial and neo-colonial development and curriculum issues in theological education.
  • Willingness to adopt justice-oriented pedagogies.
  • Openness and interest towards indigenous/native perspectives and approaches.
  • Candidate must demonstrate promise/success as a teaching scholar and understand and support the vision of the college through teaching and research.
  • Good and quality track record of academic research and publication.
  • Minimum four (4) years of teaching experience in tertiary level.
  • Minimum four (4) years of research supervision in postgraduate level.

Desired:

  • Experience and readiness in teaching and supervising students for whom English is not the first language.
  • Some knowledge about the following:
    • Pacific contextual educational approaches.
    • Curriculum integration of Pacific cultures and worldviews.
    • Diverse Pacific cultures and traditions.
    • Issues in the Pacific region.
  • Readiness to work in a team with people of different cultural and religious background and nationalities.
  • Facility in on-line pedagogy (or willingness to acquire this) is highly desirable.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Departmental Responsibilities:

  • Designing and teaching courses at Bachelor, Diploma and Master level.
  • Supervision of Bachelor (Hons) students in their final year.
  • Supervision of Master Theses from their formulation of research proposals to the submission of thesis.
  • Supervision of PhD Dissertations.
  • Willingness to promote the vision of the college through teaching.
  • Coordinating and facilitating thesis seminars for Master and PhD Students.
  • Participating in departmental meetings.
  • Organizing conferences/seminars/webinars on relevant topics.

Other Faculty Responsibilities:

  • Participating in meetings of the faculty and different committees of the College.
  • Leadership of pastoral groups.
  • Contributing to and active participation in PTC community events and life.
  • Contributing to worship life through morning and special chapel services.
  • Participation in conferences and workshops held at PTC or the Suva area.
  • Writing courses and grading assessment for PTCEE.
  • Readiness to assist IMR programs if invited.
