Rev. Professor Upolu Vaai introducing “The Whole of Life Way”

Unbury the indigenous Pasifika philosophy of restraint known as Vakatabu in Fiji or t?f? taofiofi in Samoa – Rev. Professor Upolu Vaai emphasised while introducing ‘The Whole of Life Way: Unburying Vakatabu Philosophies and Theologies for Development,’ at its Samoa launch on October 17 at the The National University of Samoa.
The book is the second in a series aimed at articulating the Pasifika household, as mandated by Pacific church leaders in 2018. Following the first installment, “reSTORYing the Pasifika Household,” published last year, this new volume features insights from 17 Pasifika authors who explore what a ‘whole of life’ vision looks like for our communities.
The authors delve into the societal frameworks shaped by secularism and Western philosophies, questioning their impacts on Pasifika identities. Their passion for transformative development is reflected in their compelling arguments for the relevance of Pasifika philosophies, ethics, and spiritualities.
Central to this discussion is the concept of Vakatabu, which highlights the power of pause and restraint. In Pasifika culture, restraint, or t?f? taofiofi, allows us to nurture relationships and honor the sacred connections between people, land, and ocean. It is through this practice that we create space for healing and renewal, recognizing the importance of slowing down in our development pathways.
